President Donald Trump, on Wednesday, June. 14, 2017, 4:25 p.m. ET, announced to the public that the shooter of Republican Steve Scalise of Louisiana died from his injuries. The killer was gunned downed by law enforcement who returned fire.

The incident took place at 8:30 a.m. ET, in Alexandria, Virginia and just 7 miles from the White House. Federal law enforcement administrators acknowledged the shooter was a Bernie Sanders supporter, named James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois. Scalise and four others were shot and injured by Hodgkinson.

Eyewitnesses said that Hodgkinson sprayed more than 100 bullets from a semi-automatic rifle before dying. Hodgkinson owned a home inspection company in Illinois. However, his license ended in November, and he did not file a renewal. Some who knew him identified Hodgkinson as a disturbed man with a history of committing crimes. According to CNN, he often condemned the GOP both online and in letters he wrote to a tabloid in his hometown.

Hodgkinson was not a stranger to arrests. In fact, starting in 2006, he had been detained many times over the years for assault and battery. It is documented that he resisted arrest after being pulled over for driving drunk. However, his most severe charge occurred after a domestic violence dispute and a negligent discharge of a gun.

Scalise, on June 19, 2014, was chosen by his Republican contemporaries to serve as Majority Whip of the United States House of Congresses. Scalise, the only affiliate of Congress to be shot, caught a bullet in his hip. Witnesses say that they saw Scalise inch into right field with a trail of blood behind him. Jeff Flake, a former armed combat physician, rushed to help Scalise after the shooter was taken down.

As of 9:45 a.m., Scalise was undergoing an operation for his wound. Hodgkinson was a fervent supporter of Sanders, who went on record to mention that Hodgkinson endorsed his bid to become president in 2016. Witnesses say that Hodgkinson hated Republicans. The shooting occurred among many Republican members of Congress at a baseball field in the Del Ray district. It appears that they were practicing for a once a year congressional contributions baseball game. Meanwhile, reports say that Scalise wounds are not considered to be life-threatening, his office mentioned in a report.
