Articles of Impeachment Filed Against Donald Trump

Representatives Al Green, D-Texas, and Brad Sherman, D-Calif., have joined forces and filed an article of impeachment against Donald Trump. Sen. Green promises more will come if the House Judiciary Committee does not act.

This article accuses Trump of obstructing justice when he allegedly asked James Comey, former FBI director, to “ease-off” his former National Security Adviser General Michael Flynn, who was under investigation for his ties to Russia during the presidential campaign and election.

Sherman stated, “It now seems likely that the President had something to hide when he tried to curtail the investigation of [former] National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and the wider Russian probes.”

Rep. Green stated, “The House of Representatives has to have the opportunity, and for them to have the opportunity, somebody’s gotta have the courage to file impeachment articles.”

Additionally, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has called for an independent investigation. “Recent revelations, coupled with [the] Presidents’s unprecedented campaign of dishonesty and secrecy, give greater urgency to the need for House Republicans [to] bring a vote to the floor immediately to establish an outside, independent commission.”

Heads turned when Donald Trump Jr. released emails of a meeting he had with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential campaign. He insists that the meeting was to receive information on Hilary Clinton. This information comes after his father has been in office for six months.

Impeachment requires an article to be approved by a simple majority of the House before the charges are moved to the Senate. The United States Constitution allows formal charges to be brought against any civil officer.

Rep. Green said,” The president has to come before the bar of justice, and the only place that the bar of justice exists is the House of Representatives. Each member of the House can file a resolution for impeachment.”

Very few Republicans want to remove their president, and Democrats want to distance themselves, feeling that their response can lead to more support for Republicans.

Rep. Sherman stated,” My hope is that we end incompetent, impulsive government.”

The elements to impeach Trump include an accommodation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, a unified Democratic Party, and a large amount of support from Republicans. The Associated Press reported it will be a long shot for lawmakers to remove Trump from office.

The only two presidents to have successfully been impeached are Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson. Neither one was removed from the presidency. Richard Nixon was unsuccessfully impeached because he resigned before the vote.
