The Pentagon released a statement that a United States fighter jet shot down a Syrian Su-22 on Sunday, June 6, 2017. The attack was in response to a Su-22 bombing of an area controlled by the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The incident happened hours after Syrian loyalists attacked fighters that were supported by the U.S. The attack occurred in the village of Ja’Din, which is southwest of Raqqa and Tabqah, on the northeast bank of the Euphrates River. This was the first time a United States aircraft took down a manned enemy jet, in over a decade.
The act is the fourth time in a month the U.S. has ordered the military to attack forces that support the Syrian government. The Washington Post reported that the attack signifies that America is increasing its role in the war in Syria.
The Syrian military issued a statement that said the jet’s lone pilot was killed in the attack and was carrying out a mission against the state of radical Islam.
The Pentagon said the military used a safe way to communicate with the Russian Federation. The Department of Defense communicated with Russia, Syria’s main ally, to prevent the incident from snowballing.
Fox News World reported that Raqqa is the de facto capital of ISIS. The coalition headquarters in Iraq released a statement that a United States F/A-18E Super Hornet brought down a Syrian Su-22. The attack occurred after the Syrian aircraft dropped bombs near locations held by the SDF. The forces of the original attack were led by Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.
The coalition stated the air battle followed the Rules of Engagement. It similarly adhered to the rules of self-defense drafted by the Pentagon. A great number of SDF troops were hurt in the rival force’s assault. In an effort to stop the attack, Russian officials had been notified of the incident.
The coalition said their goal is to defeat ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Their statement then said that they do not pursue conflicts with Russian or Syrian regimes, or factions which are associated with their regimes. However, they will not stop the defensive actions that are associated with any threat to them.
NBC News reported that the coalition said in their statement, the initial attack was carried out by forces loyal to Assad. The assault caused an unknown number of fatalities and drove out SDF soldiers.
Two hours after the U.S. launched an attack against Syria, NBC News reported that the SDF is a major ally in the war against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
