The panel of adjudicators in the court case of Jeronimo Yanez has finally come to an end as a verdict was released on June 16, 2017, at 3:39 p.m., ET. The trial involves the well-known Philando Castile shooting, that took on July 6, 2016. The results are projected to be read in court soon.
On Monday, jurors started thinking over the case, after closing arguments. Those discussions involved the trial of Yanez, a St. Anthony, Minnesota police officer who gunned down Castile. The incident took place after Castile was being pulled over in a suburb of St. Paul, called Falcon Heights. At the time, he was driving a vehicle with his fiancée, Diamond Reynolds, and her four-year-old daughter.
Castile was shot in the chest seven times during a traffic stop. Officer Yanez was indicted with one count of second-degree murder. Later, two counts of critical discharge of a weapon were added. Castile expired in the emergency room of the Hennepin County Medical Center, at 9:37 p.m. CDT — just 20 minutes after the incident.
Last Friday, Yanez attested that Castile had a gun in his pocket. He later testified that Castile went to reach for the weapon despite his instructions not to do so. Also, his defense attorneys made the argument that Castile was intoxicated with marijuana and mentioned that influenced his actions.
The aftershock of the killing was live-streamed by Castile’s fiancée, who sat in the passenger seat at the time of the shooting. Ms. Reynolds’ video was responsible for igniting demonstrations locally, and nationwide. Twin City News reports that Yanez was the first law enforcement officer in recent Minnesota history, to be incriminated in an on-duty homicide.
UPDATE: 4:08 p.m. ET, the announcement was made that Yanez was exonerated of murder in the deadly shooting of Castille.
