Shooting at San Bernardino Elementary School Leaves Dead and Wounded [Update]

After a shooting occurred at the North Park Elementary School campus in San Bernardino, on Monday, April 10, 2017, the California school remains on lockdown. Reports indicate that the shooter walked into the school at around 10 a.m. PT and opened fire.

The San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan is calling this murder-suicide shooting. He reported in a tweet that two adults were found in a classroom dead. The chief added that it is believed that “the suspect is down and there’s no further threat.”

Two injured students were taken to a local trauma center by a MediVac helicopter, as reported by Maria Garcia, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino City Unified School District. Their conditions have yet to be released.

Garcia confirmed that one of the victims is a teacher. It has yet to be clarified if the shooter and teacher are the two deceased adults discovered, or if the two classroom shooting victims are collateral fatalities.

As a result of the shooting, North Park Elementary School students were evacuated for safety to the Cajon High School. The school district instructed parents, via a tweet, to bring a picture ID to pick up their children.

Additional local elementary schools were placed on lockdown. According to the school district, students and faculty at Cajon Elementary School and Hillside Elementary School have been locked in for safety concerns. The students at the close by Cal State University in San Bernardino were instructed to shelter in place as well.

UPDATE: NBC News reports one more victim has perished in the husband-wive murder-suicide shooting. Eight-year-old Jonathon Marinez died shortly after being transported to the hospital. He and an unidentified 9-year-old were struck by gunfire when their teacher’s husband burst into the classroom. The unidentified child remains in the hospital in stable condition.
