The San Antonio Spurs held on for a game-2 win over the Memphis Grizzlies, 96-82, Monday, April 17, 2017. The Spurs took a 2-0 lead in their best of seven first round series in front of the home crowd at the AT&T Arena in San Antonio.
The Spurs dominated most of the first half. They closed the first period leading 29 to 16. At one point they lead by as much as 26 points. The Spurs finished the half to lead the Grizzlies by 19 at the end of the second quarter; 56-37.
It looked like a blowout was looming until the visiting Grizzlies staged a gritty run to close, within 10 points by the end of quarter number three, and began the final period behind; 75-65.
The Grizzlies started the fourth with a 6-0 run and closed to within 4 points; 75-71. That was as close as they came to the Spurs the rest of the game.
Defensively, the Spurs are ranked first in the NBA, and it showed in the closing half of the fourth quarter. Steals and blocked shots hampered any chance the Grizzlies had of pulling off an upset in San Antonio.
Guard Mark Conley Jr. led the scoring for the Grizzlies with 24 points and a game lead of 8 assists. The Spurs Kawhi Leonard led all scorers, with 37 points. It was a career playoff high for the star guard who also led all rebounders with 11 boards.
The duel of brothers, Marc Gasol for the Grizzlies, and Pau Gasol for the Spurs was won by Marc, with 12 points to his brother’s 10.
The two teams will continue the series with game 3 in Memphis on Thursday, April 20.
