J.K. Rowling has done it again. Like the unexpected girth of Hermione’s satchel in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,” or a magical tent, which on the outside seems normal, but inside is larger than a 3,200 square foot house, Rowling’s world of magic just keeps getting bigger. The author’s new installment of the wizarding world “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2” is slated to hit theaters Nov. 16, 2018.
The President and Chief Content Officer of Warner Bros Pictures, Toby Emmerich announced on April 12, 2017, the sequel will feature Jude Law as a young Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore.
As fans ourselves, we are thrilled to have Jude Law joining the Fantastic Beasts cast, playing a character so universally adored. Jude has been a member of the Warner Bros family for years and we’re excited to embark on this new adventure with him.
The director of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2,” David Yates, said that Law is a phenomenal and talented actor, who he has admired for a long time. Yates added he is looking forward to working with him. In the same statement, the director also noted he knows that Law will capture all of the facets of Dumbledore, as Rowling “reveals this very different time in his life.”
By this singular statement, Yates is referring to the fact that Rowling announced on Pottermore, in 2007, that Dumbledore was gay. The author also unveiled that the ex- headmaster’s relationship with Gellert Grindelwald, played by Johnny Depp, was more than friendship.
Unlike the outrage at the new live-action rendition of “Beauty and the Beast,” where LeFou is portrayed as being gay, it would seem, that most of the wizarding world has opened its arms to the openly gay character in the Harry Potter series.
However, the backlash for the Rowling’s wizarding world came at its birth. Parents voiced their dislike for the first installment of the movies, “Harry Potter and the Scorers Stone,” saying it was evil and taught children about witchcraft.
Now, 18 years after the fact, not many parents are rising up against the movies. Maybe, this too will happen with “Beauty and the Beast.”
Will the Third Dumbledore be Openly Gay?
Law is the third actor to portray Dumbledore. Fans are excited to see if they will get a glimpse of the romantic tension between him and the wizard, played by Depp, who broke his heart. Most people support Law’s new role as a gay Dumbledore.
Now, if fans remember Grindelwald was Dumbledore’s childhood friend. During their time at school, the duo garnered a plan that would place wizards above humans. Giving them rule over the muggles they perceived as less than, and in their perception it was “for the greater good.”
However, after a duel between the two led to the death of Dumbledore’s sister, the ex- headmaster separated himself from the ideals of Grindelwald. Following World War II, the villainous wizard’s demise came by Dumbledore hands, defeating the man he once loved.
Tweets Show Excitement About Law’s New Role
The wonderful world of the internet allows people to voice their protests at a push of a button, or several. And, the sequel to Fantastic Beasts, starring Law as a gay Dumbledore, is not any different.
Fans took to Twitter voicing their feelings about Law and Depp’s characters new roles in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” Some, like rosewell, said:
If Dumbledore Played By Jude Law isn’t explicitly and flagrantly gay i’m going to throw a brick thru rowling’s window.
Obviously, this fan is wanting to make sure that Rowling gets being gay down to an art.
Moreover, most of the tweets are pro-gay and supportive of Law playing the part. For instance, another post by Julia Ember tweeted:
I don’t really care who plays Dumbledore in the next Potter film, as long as they portray him as gay on screen. A romantic subplot for young, gay Dumbledore? I would be here for that.
One thing is clear, how the character is played on-screen will directly affect those watching.
