The Memphis Grizzlies held on for a thrilling game-4 overtime win over the San Antonio Spurs, 110-108, Saturday, April 22, 2017, at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee.
This was the first overtime game in the playoffs. It was extremely competitive throughout. Both the Spurs and Grizzlies held a 10 point lead at different times during the game, only to see the second half become a back and forth contest.
The fourth period was scintillating and featured an amazing run by the Spurs MVP candidate, Kawhi Leonard. He scored the last 16 points for San Antonio and led all scorers with a career playoff high, of 43 points. Leonard was 18 of 18 in free throw shooting this game and is perfect, so far, in the playoffs with 40 of 40 free throws made.
But even Leonard’s herculean efforts could not overcome the determined Grizzlies and their star guard, Mike Conley. He finished with a career playoff high of 35 points.
The Spurs led the NBA in 3-point shooting percentage during the regular season but struggled in this game. The contest came down to Marc Gasol making a shot with 0.7 seconds left in overtime for the win.
A resurgent Tony Parker pitched in with 22 points for the Spurs. Pau Gasol had the most boards for Spurs with 11 rebounds.
Gasol led all of the rebounders, grabbing 12 boards. Conley had eight assists, to go along with his 35 points.
Memphis was turnover-prone during much of the game but secured the ball when it really mattered. This win evens the best-of-seven series at two games each. These two teams will meet for game five on Monday, April 24, in San Antonio.
