Penelope Cruz, as Donatella Versace, in upcoming “American Crime Story” episodes, has just been announced. Ryan Murphy, executive producer of the show, cast the Oscar winner, Cruz, as reported by Entertainment Weekly on March 20, 2017, at 1 p.m. ET.
Cruz is to play the sister of the fashion designer, Gianni Versace, who was murdered at his South Beach, FL home. Fans have long waited for the casting call announcement after hearing false reports of Lady Gaga being considered for the part. The full title of the newest chapter in the anthology series is to be, “Versace: American Crime Story.”
Already signed on to join Cruz as cast members are Edgar Ramirez, who will be playing Gianni, and Glee actor, Darren Criss as Gianni’s killer, Andrew Cunanan. This newest “American Crime Story” is based on the book, “Vulgar Favors,” by Maureen Orth.
Cruz as Donatella Versace in upcoming “American Crime Story,” will be the third in Murphy’s series about real-life crimes. This follows “The People vs O.J. Simpson” in 2016 and the upcoming Katrina in 2018. The Versace story is said to air as well in 2018.
Fans have waited with baited anticipation since Murphy’s casting of Gaga in his “American Horror Story: Hotel.” Amid many rumors, following her Golden Globe-winning role, lovers of both Gaga and “American Crime Story,” thought the Super Bowl singer would be chosen as Donatella. This past January, Murphy publicly put to bed the buzz, while at a Television Critics Association press tour. He stated that although Gaga is a friend she is busy performing the Super Bowl, the movie “A Star Is Born,” and will be on tour.
Murphy explained it is a daunting commitment of five months of work to do a show like “Versace.” Cruz, as Donatella Versace, in upcoming “American Crime Story,” will be very busy shooting around the world. As far as Gaga, Murphy has not ruled out working with her on a future endeavor.
