Collateral Beauty

Will Smith will tug at heartstrings of movie audiences in “Collateral Beauty.” Time Warner Cable presents this film in time for the Winter Holidays; it will be released in the United States on Dec. 18, 2016.

The acting ensemble includes Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, Kiera Knightly, and Ed Norton. “Collateral Beauty” centers around an advertising executive, Howard Inlet, played by Smith. He suffers a tremendous personal loss, which leads him to withdraw from life.

Fortunately, his colleagues care enough to create a plan that forces him to confront his loss. The plan devised is described as surprising and profoundly human.

‘Collateral Beauty.’ Love. Time. Death.

In the “Collateral Beauty” trailer voiceover,  “Love, time, death. Now these three things connect every single human being on earth.” The man speaking proclaims that everyone craves more time, longs for love, and fears death. The introduction to the film will tug at the heartstrings.

To demonstrate that “we’re here to connect,” a complex series of rectangles, which fall like dominoes, is set up and toppled by Smith. They are also symbolic of having one’s life in order, however, with the flick of a finger or fate, everything drastically changes. When the dominoes begin to fall, perfection methodically crumbles.

The main character begins to write letters to concepts, rather than people. Somehow Inlet’s associates discover this and begin to confront him. They each play a role as a concept, like time, death.

When Mirren asks to whom did he wrote the letter he just mailed, he responds death. She extends a hand, introducing herself as death, and tells him that she is pleased to meet him. With a furrowed brow, Inlet walks away, but she follows. Mirren pleads with him to talk to her. He shouts, “I don’t want this!”

The scenario is repeated with other universal concepts until he responds as his friends intend. “Collateral Beauty” reveals the memories of a man who has had his child ripped from his arms by death. Smith portrays an angry, lost man. He is a daddy with empty arms, who withdraws. However, he ultimately begins to exhibit his loss when friends continue to confront him.
