“The Wall Street Journal” reported that Mark Kirk is considered one of the most vulnerable Senate Republicans because Tammy Duckworth has worked tirelessly to link Kirk with the Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump. Unfortunately for Kirk, Duckworth is a well-liked politician and veteran. The only bad publicity Kirk has available, to tarnish the image of Duckworth, came from her time as the head of the state of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Recently, there was a civil lawsuit filed against Duckworth claiming workplace retaliation, during her time as the head of the state of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Attorney General Lisa Madigan represented Duckworth during this case. Attorney General Madigan stated the civil case was settled with a $26,000 fine, paid by the state on Friday, June 22, 2016. This settlement saved the state money since they no longer needed to pay lawyer fees. Now that this case has been settled out-of-court, Kirk no longer has an argument against Duckworth’s reputation.
It has been discussed how Duckworth has continued to link Trump and Kirk repeatedly. This has led to Kirk turning his back on the Republican Party and Trump. Over the past several months, Kirk has attempted to differentiate himself from Trump. This is considered an issue within the Republican Party. Candidates who were running for office, on the same ticket as Trump, are nervous voters will link the unpredictable actions and beliefs of Trump with their campaigns. It is believed this reality could cost Republicans valuable votes on election day. This is why Duckworth has been able to challenge Kirk for his Illinois State Senate Seat.
On a recent advertisement for Kirk, it concluded with the statement, Kirk is now running as an Independent candidate. He also turned his back on the Republican Party when he called for a vote on the Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland. This was viewed as a direct threat to the party because it was President Obama who nominated Garland. Duckworth claims she is responsible for Kirk’s transition from a typical conservative, toward a more moderate candidate.
It is important for Duckworth to face a more moderate candidate because she is in favor of gun control, which is typically opposed by the most conservative constituents. It was reported Duckworth was not present at the National Day of Action rally, held in Chicago, Illinois, on Wednesday, June 29, 2016. It has been argued Duckworth chose to attend a fundraiser at a Dallas mansion, instead of actively participating in one of her hot political topics. At the same time, the event was attended by five other Democratic representatives from all over the United States.
Duckworth took this opportunity to allow other people in her party to discuss the need for gun control. Duckworth focused on the idea that she is looking to find bi-partisan support for a legitimate vote on gun control legislation. During the National Day of Action, Minority House Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke to the crowd and suggested people listen to the heartbreak of every community touched by gun violence. Duckworth has been able to challenge Kirk for his Illinois State Senate Seat because Americans are tired of the current Congress not working properly for the good of the American society.
