Chicago Fire Department officials reported that a police officer was shot Thursday evening at East 18th Street and Calumet Parkway at approximately 8:15 p.m. Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, stated the officer was shot in his lower body but was uncertain about his condition. The location of the incident took place in the Prairie District Neighborhood, where the officer was assigned to bike patrol the Central District.
The Chicago policeman was caught in the midst of gunfire for a man who was stopped for drinking in the Prairie District Neighborhood. The injured officer was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where his condition has been stabilized, according to a fire official. The Chicago police transported the officer without an ambulance in a department vehicle.
Amani Abou-Harb said she was walking her dog near Fort Dearborn Park when she observed the suspect drinking near girls playing volleyball. She told the three officers, who were patrolling the Prairie District neighborhood on their bikes before she heard gunshots.
According to eyewitness sources, when the officer approached the suspect, the man pulled out a gun and shot the officer in the leg. Other sources told reporters that the injured officer was expected to recover from the gunshot wound.
