On July 17, 2016, several law enforcement officials in Baton Rouge, Louisiana were shot. There is confirmation that three officers have died as a result. According to “The Advocate,” the shooting situation began at approximately 9:00 a.m. CDT. By 11:00 a.m. the scene was considered contained. Officials were still investigating.
The agencies involved included the Baton Rouge Police Department and East Baton Rouge Parish (EBR) Sheriff’s Office. Casey Hicks, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, relayed the information that unfolded this morning.
During an active shooting that took place new Airline and Old Hammond Highways. Several officers were shot. There was no information about how many officers were wounded. The injured officers were transported to a local hospital.
UPDATE 12:00 p.m.: WAFB, a CBS affiliate reported that there is one suspect is dead, and there may be at least two suspects still at large.
There were initial reports that seven officers were shot. However, the information was updated to confirm that there only six officers shot.
Reports made by witnesses indicate there were at least 30 gunshots heard near the B-Quik Convenience Store on Airline Highway. Once stated the shooting had begun before the police arrived. An emergency services dispatch operator reported that one caller said there were shots, but they did not know where the shots were originating.
UPDATE 12:25 p.m.: The Advocate reported there was chaotic communication on the police dispatch radio that began at 8:45 a.m. The first came from an officer who said that a woman had walked up and said there was a person with an assault rifle behind the store. The next was frantic, “Shots fired. Officer down.” This was repeated twice and then the officer added that a city cop was shot.
UPDATE 3:14 p.m.: During a press conference on NBC News, Baton Rouge law enforcement officials said that case was no longer considered an active shooter situation. Furthermore, contrary to earlier reports the police no longer think that there are no suspects other than the one who was killed earlier.
