UCLA Shooting Two Dead and a Campus on Lockdown

UCLA Shooting Two Dead and a Campus on Lockdown [Update]

According to CNN News, there has been a shooting at the UCLA campus today June 1, 2016. Two people have been shot and it is unclear, at this time, whether or not it was a murder-suicide, but that the active shooter is holed up in the Engineering Building No. 4.

The campus was quickly filled with SWAT officers and was surrounded by dozens of squad cars as law enforcement tried to clear the campus floor by floor.

The shooting took place just a few days before final exams are to take place, reported CNN. Which can only mean that testing for students can be hindered in the aftermath of this tragic event as a student Teddi Mattox states his own concerns saying to CNN News:

“We got the alert and a woman said, ‘This is not a joke, everyone get to the back of the dining hall because we have to stay away from the windows,'” she told CNN. “We’re crowded back here, we’ve been here for at least an hour and a half. People are crying, they’re nervous, they’re shaking. “The shooting has prompted a campus-wide lockdown of the University, which has forced the hundreds within the school to hide inside the campuses, many students are terrified for their lives.

It is also unclear whether or not the two people killed were students or campus staff members at this time, as stated by UCLA Police Chief James Herren.

The campus population includes more than 40,000 students and is a monumental task to undergo as far as clearing the area to make sure all students and staff are safe, as well as any visiting people to the campus. The LAPD has been using Twitter to advise all to stay away from the building in lieu of the shooting, according to CNN News.

UPDATE: 6:18 p.m. “Los Angeles Times” reported the shooting that took place earlier in the day is being called a murder-suicide by the police. The victim was an associate professor at UCLA. His name was William S. Klug, the father of two and only 39 years old. The apparent suicide is thought to be a person who was young enough for authorities to believe he was a student. He shot Klug and then turned the gun on himself. His identity has not been released.
