Netflix is known for its many original series that stream on their internet network. One of the streaming shows is, “Orange is the New Black” (OITNB), which has quickly become one of the favorites among fans worldwide. “US Weekly” reported the Season 4 premiere will begin on June 17, 2016.
The Netflix original show, “Orange Is the New Black,” first premiered on July 11, 2013, with Piper Chapman, as the main character. She is played by the actress Taylor Schilling. In the Netflix series she was arrested for a crime she committed five years prior, while she was with her then-girlfriend, Alex Vause, played by actress Laura Prepon.
Piper Chapman – Who Is She Really?
The character resembles the series author, Piper Kerman, who wrote the “New York Times” best-selling book, “Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison,” which is a direct spin-off of the series. The book highlights a similar set of circumstances, in which the author herself, at the age of 24, took a flight to Belgium, with a suitcase full of money that was meant for a West African drug kingpin in 1993.
Just like the book, Kerman formed a relationship with a woman who was involved in a drug smuggling ring. Just like the fictional character in the Netflix series, Chapman was involved with her lover who was involved in a drug ring. Kerman left the lifestyle several months after it started. Kerman was, however, named in being part of the drug ring five years later, in February 2004, and later went to the Federal Correction Institution in Danbury, Conn.
Inside a Few of the Main Characters
According to NPR Books, some of what Kerman had gone through in prison and what happened within the prison walls is true, of course, there are many added fictional events in the Netflix adaptation to the story’s plot. Although, Chapman closely follows Kerman’s storyline in the beginning of the Netflix original series, “Orange is the New Black,” some characters, however, do not.
Upon Chapman’s arrival to prison, she meets several different women, the most memorable being; Suzanne Crazy Eyes Warren, who is played by Uzo Aduba. When Chapman arrives at the prison Crazy Eyes develops a crush on her. Her mental status comes into question pretty quickly as the audience views how unstable she is by her actions.
At the onset of the Netflix series Galina Red Reznikov, played by Kate Mulgrew, is the head honcho in charge of the kitchen and the inmates who work with her. Her tough-talking gives way to her being the perfect match as the kitchens leader, as well as the unit’s leader. If an inmate makes her mad, in any way, she will starve them.
Sophia Burset, who is played by Laverne Cox, is the transgender woman who enters the jail because of a crime she committed in order to pay for her sex change operation. Her demeanor and the way she carries herself is more formal than most of the prisoners.
The warden is Joe Caputo. In the first season of the Netflix series, he was not the warden, but the job fell to him after the reigning warden was canned. He is known to be somewhat of an odd advocate for the women in the prison but at the same time someone who can be tough on the women as well.
Only a few of the stars are named in the above synopsis, the rest of the Netflix originals cocktail of actors and actress’ gives way to a cast that is formidable. The challenges and changes that each inmate goes through in the Netflix series can be related back to day-to-day life. Though they are prisoners in a women’s jail, they still experience some of the same trials and tribulations women experience who are not in prison.
