Police in Kentwood, Michigan, were investigating a domestic situation involving a 41-year-old woman who was found bleeding in an apartment. April 8, at around 8:45 p.m. CDT. Police found a trail of footsteps leading away from the apartment. As they followed, they encountered a 43-year-old man who began to threaten the officers. After several attempts to subdue the suspect, Kentwood officers fired at the man.
The incident took place when police were summoned the Pheasant Ridge Apartments. Upon arrival, officers found a large amount of blood as they peered through the window. When they entered the apartment, a 41-year-old woman was found with multiple injuries. Detroit Free Press reported the officers attempted first-aid, but she died in the apartment.
Police also found a seven-year-old boy at the scene. Reports from the police department say they child was uninjured. It has placed him with protective services in the meantime while relatives are contacted.
A 43-year-old man was seen fleeing the area, and officers followed in pursuit. When they confronted the suspect, the man began to wield a knife and threaten police. As officers tried to subdue him, he made threatening movements and statements. As he began moving towards the policemen, he was shot. The suspect died from his gunshot wound in the hospital.
The police are now looking for any relatives. Officials are withholding the names of the victim, child and suspect until family members can be contacted.
