Major Fire in Downtown Las Vegas, Nevada

There was a major fire behind a shopping center attached to Lee’s Discount Liquor in downtown Las Vegas on April 9, 2016. Discount Tires was also close to the fire, located at the Lake Mead Boulevard and Tenaya Way crossroad. Recreational vehicles at a storage facility owned by U-Haul, called Storage at Summerlin, caught fire.

The fire occurred in the 7440 block of West Lake Mead Boulevard, and the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Department was at the site at 2:07 p.m. PST. The fire department tweeted at 5:58 p.m. that the fire was under control, but they were still taking care of hot spots. No injuries were reported.

Black smoke could be seen all around the valley. Mahsa Saeidi from KTNV, tweeted the smoke could be seen for miles. More than 38 vehicles were destroyed or damaged by the fire. They included trucks, boats, motor homes and trailers. It is estimated that the damage is over $1 million.

How the fire started is unknown and currently under investigation. The fire closed down Buffalo Drive and Eastbound Lake Mead Boulevard.

The video was taken by EMG Cares Foundation, Inc. They pulled their vehicle over to record the fire.
