A Chicago man and one other are charged with the murder of a 9-year-old boy. CNN reports that prosecutors have brought first-degree murder charges against Dwight Boone-Doty, 22, in connection with the death of Tyshawn Lee. Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department, released a statement that explains that Boone-Doty is the second of the suspected three men thought to have played a role in the November 2015 shooting.
In November 2015, Corey Morgan, 27, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder for his connection to the Lee murder. From the outset of the investigation, evidence suggested that the act was committed by more than one person. CNN goes on to say that police are currently searching for a third suspect, Kevin Edwards, who remains at large. All three men are members of the Terror Dome gang.
Currently incarcerated for an unrelated gun crime, Boone-Doty’s charges were made possible by the investigative collaboration of several agencies. Department of Corrections investigators is credited with uncovering details that the 9-year old was lured into an ally and executed. The child was targeted as a revenge killing that stemmed from a dispute between two rival gangs.
The Chicago Tribune reports that law enforcement sources shed light on known details revolving the child’s execution. The Gangster Disciples and the Black P Stones are gangs having operated in Chicago for many years. Both gangs endorse factions that operate independently. Investigators explain that the 9-year old’s father is a member of the Killa Ward (affiliated with the Gangsta Disciples). The child’s murder was the last in a series of murders associated with a conflict between the two groups. Terror Dome and Killa Ward have a history of back and forth violence going back two years.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the details surrounding Tyshawn Lee’s execution outline an act that suggests premeditation. The medical examiner’s report indicates that the child sustained several defensive wounds in attempts to shield himself from the gun shoots. The fatal shot entered the child’s right temple and exited the left temple.
A Chicago man and one other are charged with the murder of a 9-year old boy highlights the nationally publicized violence that has infected Chicago. According to Breitbart, Chicago is no stranger to violence, having already recorded over 100 murders in 2016. March 5, 2016, the 101st homicide occurred when a 26-year-old man was shot and killed while sitting in his automobile. Breitbart continues by explaining that the last time Chicago experienced 100 shootings in a two month period was in 1997. Alarmingly, the last time that Chicago went one day without gun violence occurred on January 28, 2015. Since that day, 3,325 citizens have in some manner been a victim of violence.
In acknowledgment of the violence that his city has experienced under his leadership, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is quoted and labeling the uptick in violence as unacceptable. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Emanuel reluctantly affirmed the accusation that Chicago police officers have been less that vigilant in implementing preventative law enforcement techniques. With the firing of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, Emanuel tells the Chicago Sun-Times that his administration holds accountable those officers who do not act according to the high standards that Chicago demands.
Emanuel went on to defend the Police Department by pointing out that it was not the police who were committing the violent acts within the community. The mayor blamed gang members for terrorizing the city. In the same statement, Emanuel said that the police want to perform their duties at the highest degree of professionalism. Emanuel finished by asking the community to recognize that violent acts grab headlines, unlike the crimes that are prevented that go unnoticed. Regardless of who is to blame, the headline for March 8, 2016, is “A Chicago man and one other are charged with the murder of a 9-year old boy, with the search for a third man still underway.”
