Zayn Malik Thanks One Direction Bandmates During Acceptance Speech

Former One Direction member, Zayn Malik, thanked his bandmates during his acceptance speech for an award for Outstanding Achievement in Music he received at the Asian Awards, according to the BBC and other media sources. Malik called them “the best guys that I ever met” at the fifth annual awards ceremony.

Zayn Malik, 22, decided to quit One Direction a few weeks ago in late March. At first, One Direction fans chalked up Malik’s absence from the band’s On The Road tour to being simply on a break, due to stress, which is what a rep for One Direction had stated. However, Malik decided to make his break with the band a permanent one, saying that he was tired of being in the spotlight all of the time, and he wanted to live a more or less “normal” life.

At the 2015 Asian Awards, Malik’s head was shaved and he was wearing a nose ring. His mother, Trisha Malik, was there with him, and they walked the red carpet together. A source said that Malik just wanted a “change” and that there was no other reason behind his haircut choice. It was Malik’s first major appearance in public since leaving One Direction. At the end of his emotional speech, Malik said “Here’s to the future.”

There have been several rumors swirling around about the supposed “real” reasons behind Malik’s departure from the band. Some fans believe that he might have left because of involvement with drugs, and/or because of stress he might have felt due to having possibly been caught cheating on Perrie Edwards, his fiancée.

In an interview with the British newspaper, The Sun, Malik, who had thanked his bandmates at the Asian Awards, expressed his belief that he had let his fans down by leaving One Direction. He added, however, that “I can’t do this anymore.”

Now, One Direction plans to continue on, with just four members, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan. They have a fifth album already reportedly set to be released sometime later this year.

The first promo of One Direction, now re-branded as a foursome, came out in Billboard last week. One Direction’s most recent album, Four, and the last one with Malik, was released just this past November. Two of the big hits that came off of the album were Night Changes and Steal My Girl.

One Direction got their start on the X Factor in 2010. Simon Cowell, who helped found the band, and heads and produces records for the band’s label, Syco Music, talked about Malik’s departure with talk show host, James Corden, on The Late Late Show.

Simon Cowell said, in his interview with Corden, that he had attempted to talk Malik into remaining a member of One Direction, at least for “a bit longer.” But, according to Cowell, Malik “had enough” of being a member of the band. Cowell told Corden that he “dealt with it,” and then he made sure that the other band members “were OK.”

Zayn Malik appears to be getting on with his life, and enjoying his relative return to normalcy, though he gave his heart-felt thanks to his former One Direction bandmates during his acceptance speech at the 2015 Asian Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Music. That news, and Simon Cowell’s statement to Corden that One Direction’s fifth album will be their “best record” to date, is sure to be welcome to fans of the popular band.
