Nominations for the Tony Awards Are In!


The Tony Awards will be presented to Broadway’s best and most brilliant actors, writers, directors, musicians, composers and choreographers will be celebrated June 7 at Radio City Music Hall, and the nominations for the Tony Awards are in! The nominees have been announced by Mary-Louise Parker, a Tony Award winner, and Bruce Willis, who will be debuting on Broadway in the play, Misery. 

In line for a Tony Award for Best Musical are, with 12 nominations each, Fun Home, and An American in Paris. One musical came from a graphic novel and the other is based on an award-winning film. Also up for best musical are The Visit, and Something Rotten! This is the most coveted award and there is no clear front-runner.

The Best Play category for the Tony Awards has some tight competition as the season showed a wide variety of genres throughout the season. However the nominees are, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Hand to God, Disgraced, and Wolf Hall Parts One and Two.

Battling for Best Musical Revival are On the Twentieth Century, On The Town, and The King and I. While nominations for Best Play Revival are Skylight, The Elephant Man, You Can’t Take It With You, and This is Our Youth. 

Best Actor in a Play nominees for a Tony Award include, Steven Boyer in Hand to God, Bradley Cooper in The Elephant Man, Alex Sharp in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Bill Nighy in Skylight and Ben Miles in Wolf Hall Parts One and Two. Nominee for Best Lead Actor in a Musical, Michael Cerveris said that his nomination was special. He has been nominated for his role in Fun Home.

Sting debuted as a composer on Broadway this year. He wrote the score to The Last Ship which closed in January but it has been nominated for a Tony Award based on his expressive score and orchestrations. Sting said he was not expecting to be nominated for a Tony Award, but he is happy to be with such great people. He said the musical was embraced by the Broadway community. He called the musical experience a joy from the beginning.

The Best New Play category has only four Tony Award nominees, creating a battle between England and its former colonies, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Wolf Hall Parts One and Two are London imports. The U.S. playwrights are Disgraced and Hand to God.

Best Musical Revival nominees are On The Town, The king and I and On the Twentieth Century. While Skylight, The Elephant Man, You Can’t Take It With You and This Is Our Youth have been nominated for best play revival.

The Tony Award nominations for acting includes a wide range of actors. Sydney Lucas, nominated for her role in Fun Home, is 11 and new to the Broadway scene. Headliner for The Visit, Chita Rivera, at 82 is the belle of Broadway. Also nominated are Geneva Carr and Steven Boyer who were both in Hand to God.

Other Tony Award nominees are Helen Mirren in The Audience, Bradley Cooper in The Elephant Man, Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan for their roles in Skylight, and the star of Mad Men, Elisabeth Moss for her title role in The Heidi Chronicles, even though the show was unable to find an audience and is closing May 3.

Tony Award nominee for lead actress in on The Twentieth Century, Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming will host the 69th Tony Awards. The Tony Awards will be live from Radio City Music Hall on CBS, June 7 at 8pm ET.
