The teaser trailer released online of the highly anticipated movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has turned out to be disappointing for many fans. It was first said to have been leaked online ahead of its schedule, forcing the producers at Warner Bros. to release the official trailer early. The director of the movie, Zack Snyder and the studio had earlier planned an IMAX event on April 20th, which apparently got ruined because of the leaked trailer video. It was a subtitled, camera phone-shot version and as it was being shared all over the world, Warner Bros. decided to release the official trailer on YouTube late Friday, April 17.
It is also remarkable that the leak and eventual release of the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer comes right on heels of the official trailer release of another much awaited instalment of the hugely popular series Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This is exactly what producers at Marvel did after the trailer of their next movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron got leaked. The trailer of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice does not have many surprises or intrigue. In the opening first minute of the trailer, it has a voiceover from a number of news programs arguing if Superman was a menace or a savior. It asks if it was surprising for anyone that the most powerful man in the world was also a controversial figure. In the mean time, the camera pans towards a statue of the superhero with spotlights showing ‘False God’ graffitied across Superman’s chest on the statue in red.
Superman looks to be under intense media scrutiny, as people debate about the future of the planet. The latter half of the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice teaser trailer shows Ben Affleck watching on as this debate rages on. Then, he is shown staring more reluctantly at the Batman suit, than he ever was as the exfiltration specialist going to Iran in Argo. Technically, it means that Bruce Wayne’s days of fighting crime were over a long time ago. This is when Wayne’s butler, Alfred, is shown telling him how it all starts and the feeling, the powerlessness which turns good men cruel. At the end of the clip, the growl-voiced Batman is shown wearing a suit which looks rather bulky. The resemblance to Christian Bale’s armored suit in The Dark Knight Returns is striking. With his eyes glowing, he growls, “Tell me, do you bleed? You will.” Then there are a few quick glimpses of Batman’s revered vehicle, the Batmobile, and the titular showdown between Batman and Superman is showcased.
The fact is, traditionally, Marvel Comics and DC comics are two different universes both having their superheroes and legions of fans. After Marvels released The Avengers in 2012, which turned out to be a blockbuster, a film involving Batman, Superman and other DC superheroes was said to be on the cards. Going by the trailer, if the film shows Batman and Superman going against each other, it will be an awesome watch. However, if they are shown to be fighting together, against other opponents, the fight has the potential to turn futile. It is not the same kind of group that people saw in The Avengers. Batman and Superman, both possess the characteristics to overpower an entire army single-handedly. The lack of clarity about the roles in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice teaser trailer has disappointed many fans.
The teaser trailer does not reveal much about the movie apart from a first look at Affleck as Batman. The leaked video of the film did not even show Lex Luthor, played by Jesse Eisenberg or Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot. Affleck is the new Batman while Henry Cavill continues to play Superman. Lex Luthor only appears in voiceover suggesting that he would be the one trying to demonize Superman in the film. Fans are hoping that the other two characters are not merely cameos in the film. The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice teaser trailer has disappointed many fans and failed to get them excited. However, there is still hope for the movie as the release date is still over 11 months away. March 25, 2016 is the date when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled to open.
