Only a day-and-a-half into free agency and the changes are amazing. I believe that the losses for some teams will outweigh the gains by others. LeSean McCoy and Nick Foles leaving Philadelphia has raised many eyebrows. Drew Brees without Jimmy Graham in New Orleans was a shock. The team with the most gains so far appears to be the Indianapolis Colts.
Andrew Luck is already a premier quarterback in the NFL. Adding running back Frank Gore will give the Colts a power running game, and make Luck only more dangerous. Gore fits perfectly into the bruising rushing style of Indianapolis.
Today the Colts signed one of the best wide receivers in football, Andre Johnson. When Indianapolis decided not to resign Reggie Wayne, they were aware that they needed another target for Luck’s arm. Johnson was transparent about his desire to depart Houston and go to a team which could reach the Super Bowl; and he sought a quarterback who could get the ball to him frequently.
Johnson has seven seasons with 1,000 yards receiving. In 2014, he caught 85 passes for 936 yards in 15 games.
Indianapolis’ improving defense will benefit from both additions. The Colts’ offense will be able to keep them off of the field while they are scoring multiple touchdowns.
