On Saturday, Bristol Palin, daughter of former GOP vice presidential candidate and former Alaskan governor Sarah Palin, announced her engagement to military hero and Medal of Honor winner, Dakota Meyer. It will be the first marriage for both, though Bristol Palin was previously engaged to Levi Johnston, who is the father of her six-year-old son, Tripp.
Besides being the daughter of Sarah Palin, Bristol Palin, 24, is famous in her own right, as being the star of the Lifetime reality series about her life called Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp. She has also competed on Dancing With the Stars two seasons, and she has written an autobiography titled Not Afraid: My Journey So Far.
Bristol Palin’s fiance, Kentucky native Dakota Meyer, according to the site clevland.com, earned the Medal of Honor he received in 2012 because he saved “the lives of 36 Marines, Army soldiers and Afghan soldiers.” He did this by providing coverage for them so that they could “escape from a firefight with the Taliban.”
Bristol Palin first met Meyer in 2014 when he flew to Alaska to take part in the filming of her mother’s reality series, Amazing America with Sarah Palin. Since then, he has visited her a few more times in Alaska, and she has visited him and his family in Kentucky.
Dakota Meyer proposed to Bristol Meyer on Friday, March 13, 2015, at a Rascal Flatts concert. Meyer asked the band to dedicate the song Bless This Broken Road to them. Then, Meyer propsoed to Bristol Palin on bent knee. She posted to her Instagram account that she was “the luckiest girl in the world.”
No wedding date has been set yet by Bristol Palin and Dakota Meyer. He is also an author, having written about his life and how he earned his Medal of Honor in the book Into the Fire: A Firsthand Account of the Most Extraordinary Battle in the Afghan War.
Bristol Palin’s mom, Sarah, certainly appears to approve of her daughter’s marriage to Meyer. She posted to her Facebook page the good news, writing that “We’re honored to welcome Dakota into our family.” She noticed right away how the two seemed to hit it off, and she said that the Medal of Honor recipient is “a good and kind man who loves Bristol and Tripp, and is loved by them.”
A week before Dakota Meyer asked Bristol Palin for her hand in marriage, Meyer flew up to Alaska and asked both Todd, Bristol’s father, and Chuck Sr., her grandfather, for their permission to marry her. Then, on Saturday, Dakota Meyer wrote the romantic words at his Facebook page after he came “back from Afghanistan there were days I thought I may never be happy again,” adding that Bristol Palin “makes me a better man.”
