Sigourney Weaver hinted on the Tonight Show to host, Jimmy Fallon, on Wednesday that she might be in the planned reboot of the Alien franchise, tentatively titled Alien 5, which will be directed by Neill Blomkamp for 20th Century Fox. She is starring in another upcoming movie directed by Blomkamp, Chappie, that will be hitting theaters on March 6, 2015, and she mentioned a few details about the planned flick to Fallon as she talked to him about Chappie.
Jimmy Fallon is rarely bashful about asking any of his guests on the Tonight Show questions, and the same was the case when he asked Sigourney Weaver straight out as he was interviewing her about Chappie if she was going to be in the upcoming Alien sequel. While Sigourney Weaver did not outright say that she definitely would be in the movie reprising her iconic role as Ellen Ripley, she did mention certain details about the director and the movie. Sigourney Weaver said something along the lines that she would like to die an interesting death if she was ever in another Alien movie.
Sigourney Weaver likely has discussed the matter relatively frequently with Neill Blomkamp, 35. She has starred in the original movie, Alien, released in 1979, and in the three Alien sequels already, and she is starring in Chappie, which is also directed by Blomkamp. On the Tonight Show, Sigourney Weaver mentioned that the South African director, Blomkamp, also directed District 9 and and Elysium. Both of these movies earned over $200 million.
Following the response by Sigourney Weaver to Fallon’s question, he seemed to be satisfied he had gotten the answer out of her that she would be in the movie. She did nothing to dissuade him of that feeling, by telling him that she definitely would not be in the sequel.
For awhile, Fox had abandoned the plan of making another Alien movie with Sigourney Weaver, but this Wednesday, Neill Blomkamp announced via Instagram that the studio had greenlighted the project. The proposed Alien sequel is separate from the Prometheus movies directed by Ridley Scott, which are prequels to the Alien franchise. Alien 5 will, reportedly, take place several years after the events in the Prometheus flicks, and it will be produced by the original director of the first Alien movie, Ridley Scott.
The first Prometheus movie, starring Michael Fassbender, came out in 2012, and was directed by Ridley Scott. It did reasonably well at the box office, but critics, for the most part, panned the film. Scott is currently signed to direct Prometheus 2, as well. He has stated that there will an entirely new species of aliens in it. No scripts have yet been written for either Prometheus 2 or the proposed Alien 5 movie.
Sigourney Weaver was not involved in any of the prequels, having had her first contact with the aliens in the original Alien movie. It earned 20th Century Fox $100 million dollars, which was great, for the era. Alien 5 will be the first Alien movie made in the last 20 years.
While 20th Century Fox has not yet released official word that Sigourney Weaver will be reprising her role as Ellen Ripley in the upcoming Alien 5 movie, neither they nor Weaver have denied that possibility. Also, she seemed keen on the idea when Tonight Show host, Jimmy Fallon, asked Sigourney Weaver about it, hinting that might well happen, and if it does, that she might die in the sequel. If Sigourney Weaver is in yet another Alien movie, that will likely heighten the interest of ardent fans of the franchise even higher, to a fever pitch.
