After months of speculation and debate, X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer has finally cast Jean Grey, Storm and Cyclops. The younger characters will be played by Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp and Tye Sheridan respectively. He announced the casting through Twitter earlier this morning.
Turner is best known for her role in Game of Thrones, where she plays Sansa Stark. After spending two seasons trapped in King’s Landing with the terribly evil Joffrey Baratheon knocking her down at every opportunity, she is now in The Vale possibly running the show. However, the shorter seasons does mean that she can take on other roles, and the young Jean Grey is one of them. She is taking over from Famke Janssen.
She is not the first Game of Thrones cast member to join the X-Men cast. Peter Dinklage, known as Tyrion Lannister in the HBO TV show, played the Days of Future Past bad guy.
There is a younger version of Cyclops coming back to X-Men: Apocalypse. This is a different version to the one in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Everything that happened in that movie was reset in Days of Future Past, the prequel to the X-Men prequel. It means Sheridan gets his chance to make the character his own. The teen actor is known for his roles in Joe and The Tree of Life.
Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm have all now been cast in X-Men: Apocalypse, which is slated to be the final instalment in the three prequel movies. Storm is making a return and will be played by Alexandra Shipp. The actress has the least experience judging by her IMDb profile, but she did play Aaliyah in the late singer’s Lifetime biopic. The movie flopped, so there is hope Shipp will have more success with this new movie.
Those who enjoyed watching James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender in the previous prequel movies will not need to worry. All three are reprising their roles of Xavier, Mystique and Magneto in X-Men: Apcoalypse.
The new Marvel movie will be set in the 1980s, and will continue the story left from the previous two sequels. It will follow the younger characters as they become the mutants they are in the present-day movies.
It is currently unclear over who will have the main storylines: the new cast or the original three. It could be the set up for a new class within the franchise, but Singer has been very close-lipped about it. There are still more characters to be announced for the movie, all of which will likely be shared over the next few months.
Some cast members for other movies within the X-Men franchise have been confirmed, but may not appear in X-Men: Apocalypse. Channing Tatum is taking over the role of Gambit, while Ryan Reynolds is becoming Deadpool. There are rumors that both will appear in the new movie as a way to kick-start their standalone movies. There is still a lot of information clearly being kept close to Singer’s chest, but he has confirmed the casting of Storm, Jean Grey and Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse.
