Kaley Cuoco used her appearance at the People’s Choice Awards as a chance to choke about her feminism controversy. The Big Bang Theory star presented Wednesday night’s first award, along with her The Wedding Ringer co-stars Kevin Hart and Josh Gad.
Cuoco started the year with controversy after an interview with Redbook was published. During the interview, she was asked if she thought herself as a feminist, which she replied no. She explained that she likes to cook and take care of her husband. Equality is not something she worries about, and admitted that it may be because she has never faced problems due to being a female. However, that does not mean she does not respect women who help pave the way for equality.
There were a number of complaints after the interview. Many took to Twitter to say how “disappointed” they were, and note that she is another celebrity who has misunderstood the term feminism. However, others had commended her for her decision. The whole point in feminism is to have the choice, and the 8 Simple Rules fo Dating My Teenage Daughter actress was just showing her choice is to be a “housewife” in some aspects of her life.
The actress did later apologize for her comments. She took to Instagram to say that her comments were taken out of context, as many interviews are in the “biz,” but that she is grateful and blessed for the “strong women” who paved the way for her and others’ success. She did not quite take her words back, but apologized for offending others.
During the People’s Choice Awards, she was asked to present the award for Favorite Comedic Movie Actress. Cuoco took the chance to joke about the feminism controversy, when co-star Gad asked if she really wanted to do the category considering her stance on feminism. She responded to say that it was part of her apology tour.
Shortly after her apology on Instagram, Cuoco apologized again through an interview with Entertainment Tonight. She reiterated how blessed and lucky she has been due to women before her. She has never felt the need to fight for equality, as her career has continually grown from a young age. That was the reason for her “anti-feminism” comments.
Cuouo did slip up during the night. Johnny Galecki had to cover for his onscreen girlfriend when she forgot to mention real life husband in her thank you speech. The Big Bang Theory co-star took the microphone to thank Ryan Sweeting saying that he was his “heart” and he “can’t imagine what I’d be without you.” The 29-year-old actress thanked him with mock thumbs up and a pat on the back.
The actress won the Best Comedic TV Actress award, and presumably mentioned to her co-stars that she had forgotten to thank her husband after her speech. It was just a lucky moment that her onscreen boyfriend was up on the stage shortly afterwards. However, it did not take away Cuoco’s initial jokes about the feminism controversy at the start of the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday night.
