Game of Thrones is one of the most popular series on television and now even has an official episodic video game developed by Telltale Games. The game is available on a number of gaming consoles including the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and the release date of the next chapter in the episodic series has just begun circling the internet.
The first episode for the virtual Game of Thrones title was released in December for the PC, Mac, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and iOS and Android devices. The game’s release featured an in-depth storyline that has never been seen in the HBO series and only briefly mentioned in the book series that Game of Thrones is based on, A Song of Ice and Fire.
The first episode is called Iron from Ice and focuses on the happenings of the House Forrester, a lesser house that is rarely mentioned by Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin. Players also encounter familiar faces from the HBO series such as Cersei Lannister, her dwarf brother Tyrion Lannister and the queen-to-be Margaery Tyrell. The latest trailer for the new episode reveals the title of the next chapter, The Lost Lords.
The trailer for The Lost Lords reveals that the second episode will continue the adventures that left off in the first episode. Players will still focus on the storyline of House Forrester and take control of five different characters. More familiar faces from the Game of Thrones TV show make an appearance such as Jon Snow and notable locations found in Martin’s fictional world of Westeros can be seen in the clip as well. Landmarks such as the infamous Wall and the likes of Castle Black appear in the trailer, offering a hint at the direction of the game’s storyline.
The idea to create an episodic video game of Game of Thrones is a very smart marketing strategy, indeed. There is an infinite amount of possibilities that can occur story wise within the Game of Thrones realm and expanding the gameplay of a single title out over multiple episodes seems like just the way to handle it. Telltale Games is well known for creating these episodic style of video games. The hit AMC zombie apocalypse show The Walking Dead has also received a virtual episodic adaptation by Telltale and The Wolf Among Us is another popular title by the company, one that matures and modernizes many of the famous Grimm fairy tales such as the Big Bad Wolf.
The date of release for episode two of Telltale’s Game of Thrones is Feb. 3, 2015. Even though this is the announcement date, the new episode will not be available to Xbox users until Feb. 4 and iOS and Android gamers will have to wait until Feb. 5 to download the new episode. It is a strange situation that the episode is not released on all platforms at once, but perhaps it is part of an undoubtedly fine-tuned marketing strategy.
The Game of Thrones episodic video game will release its next chapter in only a matter of weeks and will most likely serve as another success in the franchise. Players can currently download the first episode of the game and can look forward to episodes three through six coming out later in the year.
