Democrat Gina Raimondo was elected as the first female governor of Rhode Island after having big names stump for her during the campaign. The support of First Lady Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, and the president all contributed to her win over Republican Allan Fung. Fung had the support of GOP stars like Chris Christie, but it was not enough to boost his numbers. One key issue that attracted voters to Raimondo was her support for pension reform. Both campaigns beat previous spending records in the state.
