The Saturday Night Live alum Al Franken beat Republican challenger Mike McFadden comfortably in Minnesota’s Senate race. McFadden had been trailing in the final weeks leading up to voting day and never regained the ground he had lost. This win is by a far larger margin than Franken’s first win, which he won by only 312 votes after a recount in 2008. The campaign was closely tied to the issue of partisanship as McFadden painted his opponent as a shill for President Obama. Despite the oft cited statistic that the Democrat voted in Obama’s favor 97 percent of the time, voters re-elected the former actor by a large margin.
